Couch to 5K is an app geared to help beginners start running. I’ve been asking my husband to join me on my runs for the past 5 years… he never wanted to join me. He came across the Couch to 5k app and decided to try it out.
Two months later he ran his first 5k. If you had asked me 3 months ago if he would be running a 5K today, I would laugh and say never! I witnessed what a great tool this app was for him. My husband is 30 years old, has never ran before and he breezed through his first 5k. So if you’re someone who feels like they can’t, I am telling you, you can!
The app goes through baby steps prepping your physical and cardiovascular strength. It schedules you to run 3 times a week and tells you exactly what you need to do during the run. My husband says the app makes it feel effortless.
When you first start running you may experience some pain. You’re using different muscles than you normally would and stressing on those muscles hurts a bit. First-time runners usually experience shin pain, calf tension, and slight knee pain. To help prevent/ ease this pain make sure you have appropriate shoes and form! You can assure proper form and shoes by asking someone at your local sports store.
Another thing to mention when you first start running is nutrition! You burn a significant amount of calories when you run, therefore you will be hungrier. It’s important to make healthy food choices and keep your calories under control. I personally like running on an empty stomach. It’s recommended to eat simple carbohydrates and protein post run.
